MDM migration with macOS Sonoma at MacDevOps:YVR

Last month I had the privilege to speak at the MacDevOps:YVR conference in Vancouver about an MDM migration I led late last year.

We utilized a new featured Apple added in macOS 14 Sonoma to drive our user experience and had great overall results.

I had a fantastic time meeting so many fellow MacAdmins in person, sharing my experiences and learning from the other amazing speakers.

Read on for my slide deck, a link to the video and an example script…

Slide Deck

I won’t rehash everything I talked about in this post, so click the image below to open an edited version of my presentation as a PDF with most transitions removed.

Video

I tried to make the slide deck informative on it’s own, but for additional thoughts and details please watch the 20 minute video here:

There were a ton of great speakers at this year’s event so make sure to checkout the entire MacDevOpsYVR 2024 playlist on YouTube.

Script

I got lots of requests to share the python script we deployed to the Macs. While the exact python script isn’t available, I wrote an example script in bash to share.

Why bash? I think it is more accessible (easier to understand and adapt) to a wider range of MacAdmins than python. This is very important to me since the whole purpose of my presentation is to hopefully make it easier for others to migrate MDMs.

Please note this is not the exact script we tested and used in production. It is provided as an example to cover the basic concepts. Please do not use it without extensive testing.

You can find it on my GitHub page here: MDM-Migration.sh

Thanks

Thanks to MatX and his team of organizers for putting on such a fantastic event, streaming it live and posting the videos so quickly even for those who didn’t pay to attend.

And lastly, a unique touch at MDOYVR is that Ashton from Mind’s Eye Creative live illustrates every presentation!
